I hear nothing changes you like the birth of your first child.  While I am sure this is true, I had just 7 minutes to reflect on this before the birth of my second child.  lap

My identical twin daughters, Andriana and Alexandra were born on October 8th at 12:45p and 12:52p.  They were 5 lbs. 3 oz. and 5 lbs. 7 oz, respectively.  It was difficult getting them here, but it was definitely worth the work.  They are just perfect.

I've been asked what it's like being a father - how it has changed me and my outlook.  I can say that the process is apparently instantaneous and completely out of your control.

I used to laugh with other people about crazy, protective parents.  It wasn't until I found myself yelling at a nurse at the hospital that I realized I had become one of those crazy parents.  I find this oddly comforting.

It's the little things that slowly make the situation sink in.  As with everything I do, I have made a short list of observations that have hit home the fact that I am indeed a father:

  • footDriving 5 miles under the speed limit suddenly seems perfectly normal
  • I didn't flinch when trading in my sporty car for one that can hold 2 babies and a stroller
  • Even though I really like watching the babies flail their arms and legs around, I realize this really pisses them off and so I resist the temptation to just unwrap them from their protective blanket as soon as I get home
  • Being able to feel tear-jerking joy at the same time as abject terror for long periods of time, even though these two emotions don't typically go hand-in-hand
  • Working late doesn't have quite the same ring to it
  • I now cheer at healthy-looking bowel movements
  • Love at first sight isn't as silly of an idea to me anymore

andibath Everyone has been great.  All of my various laws and in-laws and my friends.  The folks at Mary Kay have been especially kind and generous.  I couldn't ask for better family, friends, or coworkers.

Finally I feel very fortunate to have such a great wife.  Her sacrifice and determination over the last months have brought me two beautiful, healthy daughters and I can't think of a more humbling gesture.

I am extremely excited for the future.  Every day seems to bring something new already and I know that can only continue.

Congratulations! They are soooo cute!

Having a child makes you realize what's really important in life and what can truly make you happy.

One word of advice though: don't boast about trading in your sporty car. In less then 24 months you will feel like you have really earned driving a sporty car, and  because of the twins could probably get away with a Corvette and an additional Audi RS4 :)
